Tool - 2001-09-08 - Indianapolis - Matrix, Remaster

So while I was home sick a few days last week, I took to task my first attempt at matrixing a show from two seperate sources. I think this turned out really well, so I thought I would share. Enjoy!

Fall-Winter 2001 North American Tour with Meshuggah

Sources:

version 1:

source: Core Sound Low Cost Stealth Cardioids > Sony TCD-D8 > 1st gen CDR > FLAC

disc 2 - 7 tracks - 67:17

version 3:
media type: FLAC
source: Core Sound Binaurals > Sony PCM-M1/48 > 1st Gen DAT > 2nd Gen CDR > EAC > FLAC
taper: unknown
disc 1 - 8 tracks - 54:14
disc 2 - 9 tracks - 66:40

Transfer: Flac > WAV > Audacity (sync, minor EQ, new levels: Ver1 -2 dB, Ver3 -2.5 dB) > Remastered WAV @ 44.1 KHz > CD Wav (tracks) > Flac level 8

Setlist:
Tuva (cut)
01. The Grudge
02. Stinkfist
03. Forty Six & 2
04. Maynard Speaks
05. Prison Sex
06. Schism
07. Pushit

08. Disposition
09. Reflection
10. Intermission
11. Parabol / Parabola
12. Eon Blue Apocalypse / The Patient
13. Ænema
14. Maynard Speaks
15. Lateralus

Notes: Due to the length of the set and the difficulty syncing the entire show, I removed most of the Tuvan intro. And really, only one of the sources had it in full anyway.

This was another project I undertook on a whim. I was not at this show sadly (I wasn't even a fan of Tool yet at the time) but my best friend was there and wanted to see what I missed out on.

In the end these sources mixed together alright, so I thought I would share. Neither source on it's own is all that bad, but Version 1 was mostly top end and a bit distant, and Version 3 (which sounded like it was taped from a lot closer) was much more bass heavy. Both sources have some issues with crowd noise. However, that said, they complimented each other nicely once mixed. The music is pushed up and the crowd noise gets pushed down a bit, and you get a nice response across the full frequency spectrum.

Big thanks to Geordy for linking me to the Tool drive, which was where I was able to get both of these sources.

Bullet for My Valentine - 2006-06-03 - Rock AM Ring

Some more Bullet, this show is the same status as the Graspop show. I was not able to locate any full quality video captures in order to rip some high quality audio, so I had to settle for random mp3's I found on the net. Definitely looking for an upgrade to this one. The original source for this audio isn't quite as balanced as the Graspop show, there's quite a bit of reverb and it is much heavier which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you're trading out some of the clarity of the guitars and vocals. Still not bad quality at all, just need to find something that hasn't been as heavily impacted by mp3 encoding.

I like this setlist a little more than the Graspop performance, I'm happy to see Room 409 make an appearance as it's one of my favorite tracks. And you've gotta love the part where they demand a big circle pit.

Bullet for My Valentine - 2006-06-24 - Graspop

After searching and searching, I've yet to find a good quality video rip of this show for download. I did find an mp3 site that hosted this in decent quality, so I am adding it to my library until I can find an upgrade. I really love the early stuff from these guys, and look mostly for shows supporting the first two albums. I don't really have a problem with the newer stuff, it's just not as raw and powerful. It is interesting that the setlist includes two tracks off of their early EP's that weren't even included on The Poison.

This is clearly sounboard sourced as it is from a proshot video, and has good response across all frequencies. If I ever find this in lossless quality I might give a shot at EQ'ing it to bring out the guitars a little more.

Avenged Sevenfold - 2014-08-16 - The King In Tokyo

So as my search continues, this is an A7X boot I found on a foreign website. I don't know anything about the A7X.ru release group, nor the XAVEL label that apparently captured this. I also have no idea if this has circulated in the U.S... The quality on this is pretty damn good, and I believe it is a soundboard because of the good separation in the channels you can hear during the soundcheck in the first track, but I cannot verify that. I was only able to find this in mp3 encoding, but I am on the lookout for this in lossless if it exists.

Pretty standard setlist for a show supporting the latest album. I would love to see them play "Doing Time" a little more and I wish it was part of the setlist for this one, but no such luck

Avenged Sevenfold - 2013-09-22 - Rock In Rio

So, I finally got around to giving A7X's latest album a listen and really enjoyed it, and eventually had a hankering to find some good quality live material from these guys. I had practically zilch in my collection of live stuff. I've been on Dime for quite a while and a quick search didn't reveal much had been posted on there. Thus, I started with my trusty friend Google just to see what was out there. After finding A LOT of crap quality mp3's on various foreign sites, I struck gold and found a torrent for a good, high quality HD video rip of Avenged Sevenfold's Rock in Rio performance from 2013.

Initially I thought this would be an easy rip of the audio, but I was having some trouble and couldn't figure out why after ripping it, the sound wasn't the same (lack of bass, all midrange and treble). After some research I realized the TS file I was working with had a 5.1 surround track and I was only extracting the L and R channels. Eventually I got up to speed and was able to set Audacity up to be able to import and export AC3 files and I was able to extract all six streams from the 5.1 audio and master/mix it down to two channels and cut it into tracks for play in my music library. It was a bit of a learning curve and a timely task (I also did some noise/click/pop reduction in audacity as well) but well worth it.

The sound on this is great, it is obviously a soundboard from the HD video feed, so it does have a little bit of a sterile feel to it and little crowd noise except what is inserted in between tracks. Also due to the 5.1 feed, some of the instruments get highlighted at certain times over others, depending on who was on screen at that point of in the video. I believe you can find this on youtube here

Audio: AC-3, 48.0 KHz, 384 Kbps (6 Ch.)

Transfer: Demux in ProjextX > AC3 > Audacity (downmix to stereo, adjust levels) > WAV > MP3 (256 kbps)

Setlist:

1. Shepherd of Fire
2. Critical Acclaim
3. Beast and the Harlot

Comments: I was just looking for some good quality boots of A7X to rip the audio from when I came across a foreign torrent with this in it. I wasn't really ready for putting in the time for a transfer of this magnitude (took me about 6 hours total after researching the demuxing and playing with audacity), but I think it turned out well and figured I'd share it.

Killswitch Engage - 2008-01-12 - Cincinnati, OH - Bogarts

First Post! Enjoy some Killswitch! This is a show I taped back in 2008. This was quite a rowdy trip, as me and a few friends trekked about an hour and a half to Bogarts, which is a tiny venue not too far from the University of Cincinnati. It's in a little bit of a sketchy area, but I have been there several times without incident. This particular show, my friends decided to pick up a case of beer and slam on the way to the venue, so there was a lot of mouth running and general angst in the air as we walked in the place.

As you'll see in the comments below, the crowd was just as rowdy as we were and I had to fight for positioning and duck crowd surfers, avoid mosh pits, and still try to get a decent sound out of my stealthed equipment. All in all, a fair recording, it would have been better if I could have gotten away from the crowd at all (which shows up with lots of cheering and talking), but due to the venue's sound and lackluster acoustics, a good tape here is probably hard to come by for a rock or metal show.

After the show was over, we came to find our wolfpack was a man short. One of my buddies had gotten escorted out, but luckily he was waiting on us near the car. I can't remember exactly what the story was, but we were probably lucky not to have a run in with law enforcement on this night.

2. As Daylight Dies
3. Unbroken
4. Take this Oath
5. Arms of Sorrow
6. Breathe Life
7. This Fire
8. "Split down the middle"

15. This is Absolution
16. The End of Heartache
17. My Last Serenade
18. Holy Diver

"this is a song for the girls and all your fat pussies, its called arms of sorrow".

Notes: My first recording attempt using the church mics and battery box with the R-09. This was a stealth recording, you'll notice quite a bit of crowd noise throughout, venue is small and was crowded (sold out show). Theres some rustling, etc, from me getting bumped and occasionally having to adjust my mics. I made the mistake of leaving the windscreens off (Sorry). I taped from middle of floor, one half to two thirds of the way from stage to soundboard.

At the beginning of the show I was basically surrounded by people. After about the first 20 mins, I was able to slip into holes at times created by mosh pits and avoid some obstruction infront of me.

I expected better out of this recording but it is listenable all things considered. I'm still feeling out my gear somewhat.
