Breaking Benjamin - 2007-10-02 - Bloomington IL

This is just a solid Breaking Benjamin show I traded out this week, so I decided to do a review. I actually recorded them with Seether and Three Days Grace in March of 2008 (I'm planning a remaster/re-release of that one soon) and back then they did not disappoint. Very heavy and very engaged with the crowd and it shows on this recording. The taper clearly knew what he was doing and positioned himself with an unobstructed line to the speakers, as there is very little talking or crowd noise close by, but still manages to capture the energy in just the way I like it. The sound is a tad bit on the heavy end but its still clear and not distorted. A very solid effort.

Shaun Morgan from Seether joins in the Deftones cover, very well done. I'm sure they did a lot of that throughout the tour, and probably mixed it up with several different covers as well. One of my favorite things about Breaking Benjamin, they use covers to get the crowd into

I couldn't find any pictures from the date, but I made some artwork.

Stone Temple Pilots - 1993-04-04 - Groningen, The Netherlands

I love STP's old stuff. I probably went through two copies of the CORE album. In all fairness, I never really gave the rest of their catalog a fair shake as far as listening, I just felt they went away from the heaviness of that first album and that's what drew me in.

This is a really early show, I believe this got torrented on Dime shortly after Scott's death in early December and then it subsequently made its way to Guitars101. I have no idea why this boot was called "The Great Pretenders" as STP has nothing to do with Oldies Supergroups and late nineties kids TV shows. This recording has good sound and is fairly clear. There is a really slight haze on the audio that sounds reminiscent of a cassette tape or FM transmission, but it is barely noticeable. I did a frequency analysis on this and the full spectrum is there, but there's no frequency response past about 12-15 KHz. I'm thinking this was an analog recording before it made it onto a silver CD. Note there is no spike/line higher up that you usually see from FM sources.

Track 1: Crackerman

Track 10 Wet My Bed
The performance was tight, although Scott seemed a bit antagonistic towards the crowd. There is very little crowd noise. It is interesting they did the acoustic or lounge version of Sex Type Thing this early in their career. But then again when you only have one album's worth of material you do need to find a way to mix it up. I love that they closed the show with Piece of Pie. That might be my favorite track.

Deftones - 1995-12-07 - Minneapolis - Remaster

So I found these files on my hard drive. They date back to 2005 and look to be a rip of a CDR I got back when I was trading via snail mail, but from the lack of detail in the info file, I can't be for sure. I did download a lot of stuff off of Direct Connect back in those days as well. After checking the spectrum, I noticed the high end gets lopped off at around 16 KHz which is a pretty good indicator that this was either mp3'd or recorded at only 32 KHz. Either way, I decided it wasn't worth it to keep these as FLAC files (191 MB for the file set, check your source if you have this one), so I decoded back to WAV, loaded them into Audacity, applied a little EQ, and then saved them as mp3 for my music library. Note I also fixed the track split between 6, 7, and 8. Minus Blindfold was just all jacked up, with the beginning of the track at the end of Teething and the end stuck at the beginning of Engine No. 9.

Onward. This is a pretty good capture. There is some phasing at times as the taper moves, but it's not bad. It's really only a handful of spots. No idea where this guy was standing, but he must have had a good line to the speakers. There's virtually no crowd noise, so either the place was empty or he was able to avoid it somehow. Chino mentions early in the show how people look bored, so it could have just been a lame crowd.

I couldn't find any pictures or artwork for this, so I made something simple below.

Marilyn Manson - 1995-10-06 - Seattle - Crucifixtion

This is a really good Manson bootleg from the Smells Like Children Tour. It was the source for several boots, all of which are mislabeled with the wrong date and location. This show was actually recorded at RCKNDY in Seattle in October of 1995. The boots are usually labeled as being from June of 1996, trying to pass it off as a show from the Antichrist era (Crucifixtion, Urination, Gothic Undergound, Victoria BC 06/06/96). The track times for my copy line up with Crucifixtion.

The overall quality is good, potentially could even be a soundboard, but it doesn't seem to have that dry, soulless sound that you find on some boards. But there's no noticeably annoying crowd noise or talking close to the taper, either. It's just hard to tell. Either way, it's in that sweet spot right where I like it where it sounds like you're actually in the room and not watching it on TV.

Nine Inch Nails - 2000-04-20 - Indianapolis, IN

I was as this show, it was my second concert ever, and first time seeing Nine Inch Nails. It was also hosted in the brand new at the time, Conseco Fieldhouse. We drove from just over two hours away, and as soon as we arrived some punk got busted trying to sell me a concert T-shirt in the parking lot. I was standing there with the shirt in my left hand, the $20 in my right, all the while the guy is getting handcuffed right in front of me and I'm still standing there like an idiot. Finally my friends are like trying to get my attention, motioning at me, "come on free t-shirt! let's go!"

There are two known recordings of this show, an audience audio source by Rudy (Core Sound Cardioid mics + Sony PCM-M1) and a Hi8 video capture by Elvis Hitler (Sony CCD TR940 Hi8 XR). The Rudy audio source is a fine recording on its own, but the Hi8 has a DVD conversion in circulation that leaves a little to be desired. The picture is fine as you can see from the images below, but the generation of the tape that was converted has added some noise to the audio. Hopefully someday we can get a transfer from the master tape, but for now I used the Rudy audio to upgrade the AC3 track in the DVD video that you can find on Dime or posted here on YouTube.

Rage Against the Machine - 1993-02-02 - Stockholm, Sweden - SBD

This liberated boot is probably one of the best Rage recordings out there.. I lost this one not too long ago when my dog decided do chew through a couple of my data disks that I had left laying around on the floor in their sleeves next to the computer. Lesson learned. Thankfully I tracked it down as someone posted it on guitars101, so a small victory in that I was able to reclaim it. Now, the other 10 or 15 shows that went down the drain with it... Not so lucky.

Tracks 01-09: 02-02-93 The Melody, Stockholm, Sweden
Tracks 10-11: St. Louis 1993 (This is how it is listed on the CD but listening to Hadda Be Playin' On The Jukebox it is clear that Zack is speaking to German audience not an American audience...if anyone knows where these two tracks were actually recorded please contact me at killinginthename@cox.net with this information)

Time: 11 Tracks/73:25

Got this bootleg in MINT condition from Ebay and ripped it myself.
This is, in my humble opinion, one of the BEST Rage Against The Machine bootlegs ever recorded.
Zack's spoken word during Wake Up is breathtaking as is his speech at the end of Hadda Be Playin' On The Jukebox (improperly named J.F.K. on the album)
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do

Alice In Chains - 1996-07-03 - Kansas City - DVD Rip

I came across someone asking about this show on reddit the other day, so started doing some digging in my archive. This show is significant as it was Layne's last performance with the band. I had a cdr/flac copy of this show, but the sound quality was lacking as it sounded like it was sourced from a high gen cassette. After checking db.etree.org, apparently there was only a hi-8 analog video source of this show, and my cdr must have been sourced from a high gen copy. After discovering it was a video source though, the next place I looked was my DVD collection and found I had it. My info file claims it's sourced from the master. Thus, I ripped the audio, gave it a little EQ in audacity and adjusted the levels and tracked it in CD Wave.

EDIT: It has been brought to my attention this source does not pass the test for "lossless" quality, as the Hi-8 to DVD conversion used a lossy compression to encode the audio. It is still the best out there, however.

A Perfect Circle - 1999-10-18 - Nile Theatre, Mesa, AZ

For a long time the Diary of a Lovesong track from this boot had a steady rotation on my mp3 player even though I had no idea where I downloaded it or what show it came from. Since the quality was good, I eventually dedicated some time to tracking down which date it was from, as well as a lossless source of said entire show. Tool - 2001-09-08 - Indianapolis - Matrix, Remaster

So while I was home sick a few days last week, I took to task my first attempt at matrixing a show from two seperate sources. I think this turned out really well, so I thought I would share. Enjoy!

Transfer: Flac > WAV > Audacity (sync, minor EQ, new levels: Ver1 -2 dB, Ver3 -2.5 dB) > Remastered WAV @ 44.1 KHz > CD Wav (tracks) > Flac level 8

Setlist:
Tuva (cut)
01. The Grudge
02. Stinkfist
03. Forty Six & 2
04. Maynard Speaks
05. Prison Sex
06. Schism
07. Pushit

09. Reflection
10. Intermission
11. Parabol / Parabola
12. Eon Blue Apocalypse / The Patient
13. Ænema
14. Maynard Speaks
15. Lateralus

Notes: Due to the length of the set and the difficulty syncing the entire show, I removed most of the Tuvan intro. And really, only one of the sources had it in full anyway.

This was another project I undertook on a whim. I was not at this show sadly (I wasn't even a fan of Tool yet at the time) but my best friend was there and wanted to see what I missed out on.

In the end these sources mixed together alright, so I thought I would share. Neither source on it's own is all that bad, but Version 1 was mostly top end and a bit distant, and Version 3 (which sounded like it was taped from a lot closer) was much more bass heavy. Both sources have some issues with crowd noise. However, that said, they complimented each other nicely once mixed. The music is pushed up and the crowd noise gets pushed down a bit, and you get a nice response across the full frequency spectrum.

Big thanks to Geordy for linking me to the Tool drive, which was where I was able to get both of these sources.

Bullet for My Valentine - 2006-06-03 - Rock AM Ring

Some more Bullet, this show is the same status as the Graspop show. I was not able to locate any full quality video captures in order to rip some high quality audio, so I had to settle for random mp3's I found on the net. Definitely looking for an upgrade to this one. The original source for this audio isn't quite as balanced as the Graspop show, there's quite a bit of reverb and it is much heavier which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you're trading out some of the clarity of the guitars and vocals. Still not bad quality at all, just need to find something that hasn't been as heavily impacted by mp3 encoding.

I like this setlist a little more than the Graspop performance, I'm happy to see Room 409 make an appearance as it's one of my favorite tracks. And you've gotta love the part where they demand a big circle pit.
